- Bodine gets a sponsor for Daytona: GIC-24 Racing and GIC Mixon Motorsports today announced Golf Closeout Warehouse as a sponsor for the NASCAR Nextel Cup #93 and the NASCAR Busch Series #24 cars for Daytona Speedweeks activities. Founded in 1995, Golf Closeout Warehouse is America's largest liquidator of golf merchandise, including apparel, clubs, balls and accessories. The company has marketed merchandise in 52 different locations during the past 18 months, using a unique format in which it spends from as little as 30 days to as long as ten months in each market. Golf Closeout Warehouse is currently operating in four Florida locations--Clearwater, Sarasota, Fort Myers and Naples--and in Brownsville, TX. The Daytona Beach store is next to Ruby Tuesday in the Volusia Point Shopping Center directly across from Daytona U.S.A. on International Speedway Boulevard. "We're excited to join the GIC team," said company founder and president Greg Hayes. "We're launching our website store, www.GCWE.com, and we like the idea of linking with cars driven by Geoff Bodine and Kim Crosby during Daytona Speedweeks." The #93 GIC Mixon Motorsports Chevrolet will compete in the Budweiser Shootout and qualifying activities for the Daytona 500 with Geoffrey Bodine driving. - Get Well: Teddy Brown, crew chief for GIC-Mixon Busch #24 and Nextel Cup #93 was hospitalized after Pheonix and was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease and is still recovering in Lake Norman Hospital. Car Chief and long time friend Wayne Carroll will call the shots this weekend.(11-12-2004)
- GIC-Mixon Motorsports Sets Rumors To Rest, and to run the California Cup race: GIC-Mixon Motorsports co-owner Denise Mixon spoke with Catchfence.com Saturday morning and clearly stated that the #24 Busch Series team does not have any affiliation with FitzBradshaw Racing. GIC and FitzBradshaw did unite for the Pepsi 250 in July, but that was it. "We don't have any affiliation with the FitzBradshaw team," said Mixon. "They are great friends of ours, but that was a one race deal. Our team has improved greatly this season, but it's been our team not anyone else that has made that happen." Mixon also told Catchfence.com that the team will march into the Nextel Cup Series next month at California. In addition to running the Busch event, the team will also run the Nextel Cup event sporting the #93 Chevy, Steve Grissom will be the driver.(Catchfence.com)(8-22-2004)
- Harmon on the tube - Thursday: #93-Mike Harmon has been featured on several advertisements this week, promoting his upcoming appearance on ABC’s “Primetime Thursday.” Reporter Christopher Cuomo spent a lot of time talking with Harmon and his family to put together this piece. “Primetime Thursday,” featuring Mike Harmon, will air Thursday, January 30th, at 10:00pm/et on ABC. ABC is following up the broadcast with an online chat with Mike Harmon on Friday afternoon, January 31st, at 2pm Eastern. - GIC and Mixon merge: #44 BGN team owners Gregg and Denise Mixon of Davidson, NC have teamed up with #93 GIC Motorsports owner James Whitener of Shafter, California, in an effort to move the #44 team in a more positive direction. The team will be known as GIC-Mixon Motorsports with new race shop headquarters in the Mooresville, NC area which will house the #44 BGN and #93 Cup Series teams, with Mike Harmon behind the wheel of both. Mike Byrd of Clarksville, TN will assume crew chief duties for the team and has success in Winston Cup and Busch Series. He is looking forward to his new role with the team and believes he will put the team in a more competitive position in the series. - Conz Plans Changes: Brian Conz was recently informed by NASCAR that due to a rule change they have revoked Conz's approval to enter and run in the Daytona 500. NASCAR has now told Conz that at this time he is approved to run in Winston Cup at the race tracks that are 2 miles or less in length. NASCAR has told Conz that after he has competed in the first two ARCA events in 2003 at Daytona and Atlanta he will then gain unrestricted approval to run in Winston Cup including the remaining races scheduled at Daytona in July and the April and October races at Talladega. At this time, Conz's first Winston Cup event will be in Las Vegas. Testing for the #78 will begin tomorrow, Jan 15th with Mike Harmon stepping in for Conz in Daytona. Conz's shop is located in Mooresville, NC on Performance Dr. And Steve Bird, four time BGN Champ crew chief has signed on as crew chief. NASCAR has assigned #78 as the car number for the 2003 Winston Cup season. Currently the team has five cars completed and several more in various stages of production.(Brian Conz Site)(1-14-2003)
- Harmon in GQ: The January 2003 issue of GQ magazine has just hit the news stands and has feature article on Mike Harmon written by special correspondent.Peter Richmond. The article is titled "Walking Away from Racing's Worst Accident" and it gives the GQ readers some incite on Harmon's life in racing and details on the devastating accident that he walked away from last August at the Bristol Motor Speedway. Harmon states, "I am flattered to be featured in GQ Magazine, I want to thank them for the great exposure that they have given to me. Peter wrote a great story and he let the readers see a side of me that not too many people actually know about.". The article could not have came at a better time as the team is making.plans for the upcoming 2003 season. Preparations are being done for the upcoming test at Daytona, and they will also be doing some testing at Talladega in the near future. The crew has been working diligently during the so called "off season" with.sponsorship announcements coming in the upcoming new year. - New Cup Team? UPDATE: A new NASCAR Winston Cup series race team has designed an innovative and creative way for sponsors to get involved with NASCAR motorsports. The new team is the #93 GIC MotorSports NASCAR Winston Cup series racing team based out of Mooresville, NC. The team also has business offices in Bakersfield, CA and Daytona Beach, FL. James Whitener from Bakersfield, California is the owner of this new Winston Cup team. Whitener, also owns and operates Global Industrial Contractors, corporately located in Shafter, CA. Global Industrial Contractors is an industrial construction company that does HVAC, electrical and mechanical design, installation and construction. The GIC MotorSports #93 Ford Taurus NASCAR Winston Cup race team will be attempting two NASCAR Winston Cup races this season. The team's first race will be the Phoenix International Raceway scheduled for November 10th. The second race scheduled for the team will be the season finale NASCAR Winston Cup Series Race at Homestead-Miami Speedway on November 17th. The #93 GIC team also is planning to be running the full Winston Cup series schedule next year beginning with Daytona 500 in February 2003. The GIC team's Ford Taurus racecars, motors and other equipment have been purchased from several of the top name players in the motorsports business. The team plans to have driver announcements coming soon. The GIC team is currently seeking sponsorships on all scalable levels for either of the two NASCAR Series races and welcome any inquires regarding participation. UPDATE: Mike Harmon, BGN (#44) regular, has signed a two-race deal with a new NASCAR Winston Cup Team, GIC MotorSports. The GIC MotorSports' #93 Ford Taurus will be attempting Winston Cup races in Phoenix and Homestead with Harmon behind the wheel. Mike Harmon has over 350 short track Victories, 5 short track Championships, including one NASCAR Weekly Racing Series championship. He has also raced in the ARCA, Featherlite Modified, CTS and BGN. This is his first attempt at the Winston Cup Series (actually Harmon was slated to run the #90 Donlavey Racing Ford in 1999 during the Big Daddy's BBQ mess but was released before the Daytona 500). The GIC MotorSports #93 Winston Cup team is based out of Mooresville N.C. with business offices in Shafter, CA and Daytona Beach, FL. GIC team owner, James Whitener said, "We have been looking at Mike for a long time and I firmly believe he can do the job for us. He not only has the experience but he also has the heart and drive we need to achieve our goals in racing. We have assembled excellent cars, engines and equipment for Mike, we are positive that we can be competitive in.Cup with this combination."
