Tommy Baldwin Racing to be featured on MSNBC show: Tommy Baldwin Racing will be featured on MSNBC's "Your Business" Program this Sunday, November 15th at 7:30am/et. Producers of the hit small business show were recently in town to do a feature story on NASCAR team partner, Tommy Baldwin Racing and how their small-business approach pays dividends through its sponsorship with Wave Energy Drink. Back in October, the MSNBC production crew attended the Bank of America 500 NASCAR event at the Lowe's Motor Speedway, spending the days in between filming several segments from the race shop headquarters of Tommy Baldwin Racing. At the race track, cameras filmed the frenetic pace of the #36 Wave Energy Drink team, while a boom microphone jostled for space in the tight garage. When not filming in the garage area, cameras trailed Baldwin and Wave Energy Drink executives through the entire property-in the team transporter, on pit road for qualifying and behind closed doors for proprietary meetings.
The Tommy Baldwin Racing/Wave Energy Drink program will air this Sunday, November 15th at 7:30am/et with a rebroadcast on Saturday, November 21st at 5:30am. On November 16th, the episode will be featured on MSNBC's "Your Business" official website and can be viewed any time, along with a complete transcript. The show, hosted by J.J. Ramberg, focuses on the world of America's small business entrepreneurs, featuring profiles, news, tips and advice. Wave Energy Expands #36 Sponsorship for rest of season: Wave Energy Drink announced an expansion of its current six-race deal with Tommy Baldwin Racing and driver of the #36 Toyota, Michael McDowell, to include the remainder of the 2009 NASCAR season. The company initially signed an agreement in August 2009 to take advantage of six key dates, but the success and brand exposure for Wave Energy Drink led to increased involvement. Wave Energy Drink will now appear as the primary sponsor of the #36 Toyotas through the Miami-Homestead season finale on November 22,, 2009. Tommy Baldwin Racing will now also experience full branding of the race cars, team uniforms and fire suits. McDowell in the #36; Carpentier out UPDATE: Michael McDowell will drive the #36 Wave Energy Drink Toyota of Tommy Baldwin Racing beginning this weekend at Richmond International Raceway. Patrick Carpenitier is no longer driving the #36 because of a business conflict in Canada. McDowell has been driving full-time in NASCAR Nationwide Series Toyota during the 2009 season and captured five top-10 finishes.(TBR PR), Carpentier was scheduled to run the #36 at Richmond, New Hampshire, Dover, Kansas and California. Mike Skinner was scheduled to run in the final six races. No word if Skinner or McDowell will run those races.(9-10-2009)
UPDATE: After being confirmed as the driver of Tommy Baldwin Racing's car #36 for six races, Patrick Carpentier has been pulled out of it after only one of his six scheduled starts. According to the website Jayski.com [via a TBR PR], Carpentier is no longer driving car #36 because of a business conflict in Canada. The possibility of a conflict between Carpentier being a Canadian citizen and the objectives of a new sponsor of the team was mentioned by some sources contacted by RueFrontenac.com.
Carpentier and Baldwin have confirmed Jayski.com's report. "We left on good terms," said Carpentier. "Obviously it's difficult for me to put aside everything that I prepare for my future in Canada just to qualify the car, run some laps and quit due to the lack of funds." Baldwin has similar thoughts. "Times are tough for everyone, but even more for small companies like us," said the owner and crew chief. "It's just normal that Patrick finds it difficult to put his life on hold whenever we need him and that it's simply to qualify the car." Moreover, with budget cuts everywhere in NASCAR, even Baldwin has had, in recent weeks, difficulties in purchasing enough sets of tires needed for practice and qualifying.(translated from French and in part from RueFrontenac.com)(9-12-2009)

Earlier this season, the Canadian driver produced an 11th-place finish for Waltrip at the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway. “Patrick is being rewarded for perserverence,” said Waltrip, who has 22 starts that equate to one top-five, four top-10 and 14 top-20 finishes at the 2.45-mile road course. “At Sonoma, he drove for me and started out with a car he wasn’t happy with. He worked with my crew chief Bootie (Barker) and my NAPA boys to get an 11th-place finish. We also had a little deal on the side. If he was able to finish solidly at Infineon Raceway and he deemed the experience of working with my team as fun and wanted to do again, then he and I would ask NAPA to allow him to drive again. We all agreed so Patrick will drive the #55 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota for NAPA and me at Watkins Glen.” The NAPA Auto Parts team prepared for the upcoming event by testing with Carpentier at Virginia International Raceway on July 22nd.(Michael Waltrip Racing)(8-3-2009)

- Riggs-Baldwin parting ways after Coke 600 UPDATE: Scott Riggs is parting ways with #36-Tommy Baldwin Racing following the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, the driver said Sunday. Riggs has qualified for eight of the first 12 races with a top finish of 25th in the Daytona 500. Riggs ran only 54 laps at Richmond and 101 laps at Darlington before his day ended because of mechanical issues. Riggs said Sunday he wasn’t optimistic that the #36 Toyota team could continue to compete for the full length of future events without significant sponsorship and that, combined with the team’s performance, made it time for him to leave. He will start the Coca-Cola 600 in the 43rd spot. “I’m a competitor and I’m a racer,” Riggs said. “… It kills my soul to know that we go to the race track and we’re not going to be competitive. Even if the car is competitive, we’re not going to be there around at the end to be competitive. I knew when we first started this deal it was going to be a possibility, I knew it was going to be hard and a struggle to get sponsorship and get it off the ground. … I just know we needed something to change.” Riggs said he and Baldwin talked about the situation this past weekend and the decision was made for him to leave.(SceneDaily)(5-25-2009)

Walter Giles, formerly a race engineer for Dale Earnhardt, Inc. (DEI), will serve as TBR’s head engineer. Jennifer Morrell, formally the team manager for TBR/Evernham Motorsports will serve as team manager. Giles, who has a mechanical engineering degree from Western Sydney Institute in Sydney, Australia, brings to TBR over 32 years of engineering knowledge and driving experience to the team. The native of Australia moved to the U.S. over a decade ago after winning more than 200 races and seven championships in various racing series as a driver. Giles began his NASCAR career working for Richard Jackson Motorsports in 1997. He made several stops before landing at DEI in 2005. He was first hired as the race engineer for DEI’s No. 1 car driven by Martin Truex Jr. In 2007, he was promoted to head of race engineering. - Bechtel Becomes Co-Owner of Tommy Baldwin Racing: Former NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series owner, Gary Bechtel [remember the #29 Cartoon Netwrok car?] joins forces with Tommy Baldwin to become a co-owner of Tommy Baldwin Racing.
“This is an incredible opportunity that allows me to get back into racing,” Bechtel said. “I am very impressed with what Tommy (Baldwin) has been able to accomplish in just three months. I love his passion and his desire to be successful on the race track. I hope to bring the last piece of the puzzle that can make TBR one of the teams to watch each week.” Bechtel knows a thing or two about running a successful NASCAR race team. In 1990, Bechtel debuted onto the NASCAR scene when he formed Diamond Ridge Motorsports. Bobby Hamilton was slated as the first driver for Bechtel’s race team. His first race was in the 1990 Coca-Cola 600. Bechtel’s success on the race track didn’t come until he started his NASCAR Nationwide Series program in 1995. Steve Grissom was tabbed as Bechtel’s first Nationwide Series driver. In only 15 races, he notched two wins, four top-five and seven top-10 finishes. Bechtel continued to have success in the Nationwide Series over the next five years. All told, he earned 10 wins, 30 top-five and 54 top-10 finishes in 174 Nationwide Series starts. At the end of the 1999 season, Bechtel sold his entire operation to Joe Gibbs and left Charlotte for California to live 70 miles outside San Francisco on a family ranch near Morgan Hill, Calif. “I learned a lot from my past experiences,” Bechtel said. “I know Tommy has the knowledge, background and technical capabilities to be successful this year and for years to come. I look forward to being an integral part of growing this team into a contender.” Baldwin is obviously pleased with the coming addition of Bechtel to his race team.
“Gary Bechtel has proven to be successful on and off the race track,” Baldwin said. “He brings a track record of success to an organization that is trying to make it to the next level. This partnership shows that we are a serious race team and that we are here to stay. Gary brings instant credibility to our race team with his past successes as a business man. He also brings a passion for racing and I am very proud and excited to have him as a key partner of our team.” TBR is still seeking sponsorship.(Everest-Marketing Group/TBR PR)(3-19-2009)
- Nexxus Lighting Set to Sponsor TBR at Bristol: Nexxus Lighting announced that it will sponsor Tommy Baldwin Racing’s #36 Toyota and driver Scott Riggs in the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway as the kick off to TBR’s small business initiative. Nexxus Lighting is a Charlotte-based company that is bringing its new patent pending LED lighting technology into the NASCAR world. Array Lighting is a new brand of commercial grade LED replacement lamps that utilize patent pending technology to offer a truly green alternative to conventional incandescent, halogen and compact fluorescent light bulbs. Array lamps are light weight, dimmable, reduce CO2 emissions and, unlike compact fluorescent light bulbs, do not contain mercury or create a hazardous waste disposal issue. Additionally, Array lamps offer tremendous cost and energy saving which can amount to over 80% energy savings versus incandescent bulbs. More savings can be gained in avoiding lamp replacement costs due to the bulb’s 50,000 hour lamp life, as compared to only 1000-2000 hours for typical incandescent bulbs. Array bulbs can last over 10 years while being burned 12 hours a day.

- Support for Tommy Baldwin Racing: On any given morning in Mooresville, N.C., Tommy Baldwin pulls up to his new race shop to find another unemployed crew member awaiting his arrival and willing to volunteer his services, if only for a day. In a sport marred by mergers, crumbling racing empires, and an ever slumping economy, many find themselves rallying behind a man with the courage to start over with a brand new team. Baldwin, a 12 year NASCAR veteran, and former Daytona 500 winning crew chief, announced earlier this month the formation of his Sprint Cup Series race team under the existing Tommy Baldwin Racing banner [#36 Toyota with driver Scott Riggs]. Taking advantage of low overhead, and an influx of restless, out-of-work, mechanical talent, Baldwin rolls up his sleeves and works diligently with his crew to prepare for their Sprint Cup debut in Daytona next month. "It's great to know that I have so many people to support me in this venture," Baldwin said. "It's overwhelming the amount of people that are behind everything I'm trying to do and accomplish as a team owner, I don't know how successful I would be without all the support." In addition to the manpower at the shop, Baldwin is also receiving an outpouring of support from industry related organizations. The following companies have pledged their support of Tommy Baldwin Racing for the 2009 NASCAR Season: Bowman, Cheerwine, Diversified Finishes, Heintz Bros Automotive, Inc., Impact Racing, Lincoln Welders, Mechanix Wear, Moog, Pro-System, Inc., Racing Electronics, Rock Batteries, Safety-Kleen, Sherman Williams, Stratosphere Casino Hotel & Tower, The Decal Source, TMC Trucking and Wix Filters. The 2009 season finds the 38-year-old native of Bahama, NC, eager to embark on a new chapter of his racing career, driving for the newly formed TBR team. Tommy Baldwin, who will hold the title of both owner and crew chief, announced the formation of his new race team earlier this month. "I look forward to working with Tommy," Riggs said. "I think we can work together to build something really strong. I feel fortunate to work with someone like Tommy who has so much experience." Riggs, with multiple years of experience at the Cup level and time behind the wheel in NASCAR's COT, brings credibility and marketability to the new team. TBR, located at 604 Performance Road, in Mooresville, NC, plans on competing in the 51st running of the Daytona 500 in February with plans to run a full schedule in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. "Having Scott Riggs on board is a huge stepping stone for Tommy Baldwin Racing," Said Baldwin. "He's a top caliber driver, and I look forward to seeing the success we can have together." - Tommy Baldwin Announces New Sprint Cup Team UPDATE 2 Blaney? #36?: Tommy Baldwin, a five-time Sprint Cup and former Daytona 500 winning crew chief announced the formation of a new Sprint Cup Series race team under the existing Tommy Baldwin Racing banner. The team, located at 604 Performance Road, in Mooresville, NC, is aggressively preparing its Toyota race cars with plans to compete in the 51st running of The Daytona 500 in February. The team plans to compete full-time in the Sprint Cup series. Baldwin is excited about his new program, "With tough economic times upon us, the timing for starting this team is right. Our overhead is low and we have a great group of talented mechanics and specialists to choose from. We can offer sponsors the chance to get into Sprint Cup racing at a fraction of the costs, without compromising on-track performance, due to our low overhead," Baldwin said. Baldwin is no stranger to team ownership as he formed a successful Nationwide program which was responsible for bringing Unilever into the sport. Baldwin, a 12 year Sprint Cup veteran, later sold the team to what is now known as Gillette-Evernham Motorsports.
It was during his ownership of the Nationwide team that Baldwin began a business relationship with Joey Arrington, of Arrington Manufacturing, Inc., located in Martinsville, Va. Baldwin will secure his Sprint Cup engines in 2009 from Arrington Manufacturing who works closely with Toyota. "We are honored to be working with Tommy again, this time on his Cup efforts. He has always been great to work with and we are looking forward to a successful year," said Arrington.
"We will do everything we can to support NASCAR and its fans," Baldwin said. "We are thankful for the opportunity NASCAR offers as we are able to prepare our own car to compete in one of the nation's top sporting events. That's what makes NASCAR so different from the other major sports. It's still attainable to be an owner, if you are willing to put the work in and I'm no stranger to hard work," Baldwin added.(Everest Marketing PR), no driver, car# or sponsor was mentioned in the PR.(1-6-2009)
